December, 1993, we flew to Chile to visit a friend who was on a Fulbright teacher exchange program in Temuco, Chile. We spent three weeks driving south, through a beautifully scenic, mountainous country. Many volcanoes, glaciers and lakes to see. From Puerto Montt we flew to Tiera del Fuego, in the Patagonian region of Chile by the straits of Magellan. Even though it was the southern hemisphere summer, it was windy and cold. The sun was out very late into the night due to the extreme southern latitudes. One of the highlights of the trip was touring the Torres del Paine National Park. It has granite spires that soar 8,000' straight up into the sky by a lake that are unique. We spend New Year's Eve in Vina del Mar, the coastal city outside of Santiago.
